Troubles with Poopie

by Melody
(Starkville, Mississippi, USA)

So, it was like any other day for me, hanging out with my one year-old James and trying to get things done around the house at the same time.

Little did I know, my son had something in store for me.

I heard him grunting as he played with his toys, and as I looked at him, his face turned red and he looked as though he was straining.

Oh, great, I thought. A poopie's on its way.

So I waited for him to finish, and then I scooped him up into his bedroom so I could change him.

Now, my son can sometimes have the inability to not stay still while I'm cleaning up his poopie; he tries to toss and turn and kick his feet, thinking the whole thing is a riot.

Well, he didn't do that today.

It was much worse.

As I began to take the diaper off, I lifted him up like I always do to wipe his little bottom, and what does he do?

He immediately puts his hand on his poopie-bottom!

Before I could put him back down and wipe the yuckies he managed to get on his hand, he thought it would be a better idea to get it off himself--by thrusting his hand right in his mouth!

Of course, I start freaking out, trying to get his hand out of his mouth, which is covered in butt-yuck at this point.

What about the germs?!

I'm thinking to myself. I need to take him to the doctor right away, this can't be good for him!

But of course, my silly son is fine--just in dire need of a bath.

Needless to say, that was one diaper change I won't soon forget.

But I think I learned that day that sometimes, I just can't prevent EVERYTHING from going into his mouth, and that this was bound to happen sooner or later.

I mean, before I know it, he might be getting into his diaper and making masterpieces on the walls.

Oh, dear. I better get a Magic Eraser.

Poopie's problem indeed
by: shashank

According to me, I think that we can't make our children understand at such a young age what is good or bad for their health. They are only babies after all.

What we can do is that whenever they eat something bad or something from the ground then we can just scold them a little and sit near them and help them to understand by physical actions not to repeat that action.

This will result in telling them that they did wrong and please don't do it again.

I know where you are at!

My 6 month is a little wriggler too.

Can not keep still.

I think that God made children resilient for a purpose, and that is so that they can withstand almost anything that they put in their mouths, noses and ears.

Obviously they have to be supervised so that things like this can be prevented but usually it isn't anything to be totally alarmed about.

The most important thing is that you don't get into a panic that they can see.

You need to remain calm and take a deep breath and see the situation for what it is.. and in your case I think you were right - just give the kid a bath and be careful next time.

Preempt his hand movements :)

Oh man, You couldn't have imagined how hard I laughed when I read this, but I also panicked when I read that.

My son almost did that but luckily I pulled his hand away.

After telling my wife she checked on him and made sure he was okay even though nothing got into his mouth.

Unfortunately we can't stop everything from going into their mouths, but we can help by making sure no small objects or dangerous objects are around and making sure everything is clean..
