The multiplication factor is so great here that we could be talking about rabbits and not about Parenting, but I know that we are not. Cherish these moments; they are what constitutes Parental Magic. What follows is an exact transcript of a letter that my son Elias wrote to his sister Katrina on September 4, 2006. He was 10 years old at the time and decided to hand write this letter (In his best, beginner handwriting style) without prompting of any kind. When I got my hands on the letter I recognized it as an example of the Parenting Magic that it is, and have saved it to this day so that I can remind myself of the small Parenting victories when things are tough, and also so that I can share it with you at this time. Sissy, It came to my attention that you like PB & J’s, I happen to specialize in that food, I have many varieties of jams and jellys. I am not uninformed that you have a busy schedule, but I would like to, possibly, get together sometime. Your people, my people, let’s do lunch. Sincerely, Mr. Elias Dobieski Note: ‘PB & J’ is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for those not familiar with this simple yet delicious kid-friendly sandwich wildly popular with the ‘younger crowd’ raised in the USA.

She was 15 years old at the time and decided to hand write this letter back to him on the opposite side of the same letter, also without prompting of any kind. Dear Mr. Elias Dobieski, I have received your letter concerning a lunch appt. sometime. You are correct – I do like PB & J’s, and I am thrilled to know that you specialize in such. I will take you up on your offer, and I suggest we meet at 4:15 pm at the kitchen table. I’ll have half of a blackberry sandwich. Thank You for your much Generosity, Sincerely, Miss Katrina A. Dobieski
And that is what Parenting Magic is all about. It is Simple. It is Uncomplicated. Unexpected yet ready to be discovered by those Parents looking for the proof that their hard work and diligence really is paying off in the lives of the children they are raising. Please note that the above letters were not my attempt at a Parental ‘Brag-Fest’. It was however a handy example of the Parenting Magic that all parents can find if they look hard enough for it. Once found, we as Parents need to applaud and praise our children for the kindness and caring they show for one another so as to build upon their successes and to produce more and more of this desired result and correct living in the future. Make sure to capture this Parenting Magic any way you can. Take pictures like the one above of your children expressing their creative side, or is that their wild side, or is that actually their ‘savage’ side? Whatever it is, take a picture (it will last longer). Save notes they write, school projects they make, macaroni valentines or clay paper weights. This way you can preserve the Parenting Magic and remind yourself from time to time, and especially in the hard times when you feel inordinately challenged by your Children’s Behavior, that you also have your Parenting Victories and good days, that your children really do listen and respond to your teachings, and that everything will turn out well at the end of the proverbial day. There is a lot more parenting wisdom to share. Here is another Parenting Magic thought: Be the Parent who catches their children doing the right thing, the kind thing, the mature thing; those things they have been taught to do in the home and which they now do because it is a part of the quality people they have become to bless your home, your life, themselves and their family and their community at any time, for any reason, over and over again. Parenting Magic Is Fostered In Our Youth As We Teach Them To Live And Play And Interact In Kind And Happy Ways Together, And It Bears Fruit When We As Parents See Our Children Begin To Live That Happy And Productive Way Of Their Own Accord, Simply Because They Want To.
