Your Baby Names Stories

“In every conceivable manner, the family is link to our past, bridge to our future."

Alex Haley (1921-1992)

Do you have a baby names story?

How is it that you finally decided on what name to give your baby?

How did you know when you had the right baby name? How did it make you feel, and did you do anything to celebrate?

We want to hear your baby names stories.

Join in today to read some baby names stories from others and then share a favorite story or two of your own.

Buh Buh Buh Baby - © Vato Bob

So many parents agonize over this most important of decisions.

How did you handle the stress of choosing your baby's name?

In our family I originally wanted to name our son Jacob, but my wife’s sister had a new baby boy whom she had named Jacob, so that name was no longer an option as far as my wife was concerned.

”What in the world”? I said. “What do you mean we can’t use that name just because your sister has used it already”?

As a guy and as a proud father I just couldn’t understand what was going on here with my choice of the awesome name Jacob, and to be honest with you I still don’t get it very well even today?

In hindsight I can’t imagine my son being called anything other than his name, Elias, but at the time I was angry, confused, and felt that in some way I had just been cheated out of my baby name of choice.

What do you think about that? Do you agree or disagree? Could you please elaborate by leaving your thoughts below?

Do you have any such naming conventions in your family or with your friends?

If you could explain this ‘name-already-taken’ phenomenon so a typical male reader can finally ‘get it’, then you indeed are a gifted communicator and your story would go a long way towards male-female understanding in this baby names game we all must play.
